"Weird Al used music videos brilliantly. His parodies of both Michael Jackson and Madonna were even more memorable than the original videos themselves."

Make the Rock Hall Weird Update Blog

Entry for March 23, 2021

It's time to finally announce our gameplan for the year; our big activity that we want everyone and anyone to participate in.

Since 2009 is a very big year as far as Al milestones go, we thought sending a card or two seemed appropriate, which leads to....

THE GREAT GREETING CARD PROJECT

Beginning April 1, we want greeting cards arriving at the Rock Hall Foundation driving home one simple point: INDUCT WEIRD AL!

It would be very cool if folks made their own cards (either by hand or by printing them on their computer), but store-bought cards are fine as well. We'll also very soon have a couple of card designs available at our Cafepress shop. Regardless, your card can be funny, to-the-point, over the top, or whatever. Make it your own; a reflection of why you feel Al should be in the Rock Hall.

We would like to see a steady stream of cards going to the Rock Hall Foundation throughout the summer, but we want to absolutely flood the office on two specific days this year: April 1 and October 23.

Why April 1? Well, besides the obvious reason of it being April Fools Day (presenting an appropriate backdrop for our request), but that whole week most of the folks at the foundation will be in Cleveland attending this year's Rock Hall induction ceremony and its related official events. We want to give them a warm greeting upon their return to New York, and nothing says "we've missed you and are thinking about you" more than stacks of greeting cards, right?

As for October 23, well, that should be obvious to any fan out there, but for the random blog-readers out there, that is the day of Al's fiftieth birthday. We will also be encouraging everyone to send Al a birthday card in the mail, but in a year which also marks not only the thirtieth anniversary of Al's first record release but also the twentieth anniversary of Al's cult classic UHF, we want to make sure our current mail campaign ends with a bang, and Al's birthday seems like a perfect time for a veritable snowstorm of Al-related greeting cards to be heading to both coasts at once.

Between April 1 and October 23, anything goes! Send as many cards as you want (but please have other people sign each one, such as family). Be creative. If you're going to design your own, be artistic; we might even put up a gallery of some of the cooler original designs folks send in.

And of course, we're still working on our video documentary, and we'll keep everyone updated on that throughout the year.

But the main focus right now is our greeting card project, and the first phase of this activity is rapidly approaching.

As always, mail going to the Rock Hall can be sent to:

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation
Attn: Joel Peresman
1290 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY 10104
USA

Get your card ready and get it sent out for an April 1 arrival. The year's campaign has begun!
