"Weird Al used music videos brilliantly. His parodies of both Michael Jackson and Madonna were even more memorable than the original videos themselves."

Make the Rock Hall Weird Update Blog

Entry for January 26, 2007

Wow, what a crazy month January has been! This month the campaign has already received more press than in all of 2004 and 2006 combined! Not surprisingly, the mentions we've been getting in the last few days have been a result of press releases we've been circulating in Australia and New Zealand as a way to create awareness for the petition (and to hopefully drum up some volunteers) before Al's big tour down there in March.

Just in case this isn't already clear throughout the site, we need the help of Al fans everywhere! If you see us mentioned somewhere and it only makes reference to Australia or New Zealand, don't be discouraged and think you can't help out. We're just starting this year's campaign down under because that's where Al's tour will begin this year, but we want all Al fans everywhere involved, regardless if you live in New York, Canada, Fiji, Antarctica, Jupiter, or anywhere else! Geography is no excuse not to pitch in.

Strangely enough, in a month in which we were mentioned on both USA Today and Rolling Stone's web sites, the nicest press coverage we've received this month came from SuicideGirls! Yeah, the softcore porn web site that spotlights punk rock chicks, their culture, and their bodies. This would be very much like getting a mention a Playboy back in the '70s when they focused heavily on culture, society, and the arts. Since our site is meant more for a general audience, it would be a little inappropriate to post a link here, but we are grateful for the mention, and for the site's members who posted so positively in the comments section (even those who claimed they'd help out...we're still waiting to hear from you).

Shifting gears a bit, but keeping with the theme of modern day Internet culture, I couldn't be happier to announce our latest celebrity petition signer. It's none other than David Lovelace, animator, musician, Retarded Animal Babies creator, Fark regular, font designer, and all-around supercool online artist. Al fans have recently seen David's work in the "Virus Alert" music video on Straight Outta Lynwood, which he animated. We sincerely thank David for helping out, and if you get a chance be sure to check out his web site!

In closing, like always, we still need more volunteers, and we definitely would love to have a field operative in New Zealand for Al's March 10 show. C'mon, whaddya waiting for??
